An equally stunning NBC news article on diet and nutrition from 2010 titled, “Nutritional value of fruits and veggies is dwindling: Chemicals that speed growth and impaire ability to absorb soil’s nutrients” didn’t do much better by saying “Today’s conventionally grown produce isn’t as healthful as it was 30 years ago — and it’s only getting worse. The decline in fruits and vegetables was first reported more than 10 years ago by English researcher Anne-Marie Mayer, PhD, who looked at the dwindling mineral concentrations of 20 UK-based crops from the 1930s to the 1980s.”
It then went on to put the nail in the coffin by saying, “In 2004, Donald Davis, PhD, a former researcher with the Biochemical Institute at the University of Texas, Austin, led a team that analyzed 43 fruits and vegetables from 1950 to 1999 and reported reductions in vitamins, minerals, and protein. Using USDA data, he found that broccoli, for example, had 130 mg of calcium in 1950. Today, that number is only 48 mg.”
And this article in HortScience Journal from February 2009 vol. 44 no. 1 15-19 called “Declining Fruit and Vegetable Nutrient Composition: What Is the Evidence?” morbidly said, “The evidence for nutrient declines began to accumulate in the 1940s with observations of (environmental) dilution effects on minerals in many foods and diverse other plants. Recent studies of historical nutrient content data for fruits and vegetables spanning 50 to 70 years show apparent median declines of 5% to 40% or more in minerals, vitamins, and protein in groups of foods, especially in vegetables.”
Dietician Elizabeth Somer, author of “Eat Your Way to Sexy” said “Nutritional supplements… ’fill in the nutritional gaps’ in a well-rounded diet.
